As part of this we have embarked on reading books on Powerful learners, Learn and Teacher Agency and Future Focused education.
I choose to read Guy Claxton's "What is the point of school?"
With gusto I aimed my highlighter and grabbed my post it notes ready to read!
Ideas I have gained from this book:
- Learning Muscles:
- Curiosity
- Courage
- Investigation
- Experimentation
- Imagination
- Reasoning
- Sociability
- Reflection
When children have been helped to develop these learning muscles, they feel more confident, and are more willing to engage intelligently with the difficulties in their lives. Similar ideas to our ICARE values and our Learning Powers that we have developed at NPS.
- Knowledge is not whats true; its what helps. Knowledge is what you use to get things done.
- How teachers 'teach' matters a great deal more than the policies and procedures that a school adopts.
- Real life = collaboration and talking. Learning emerges out of discussion.
- What students crave
- The 3 Rs - responsibility, respect and 'real'
- The 3 Cs - choice, challenge and collaboration
- Confident lifelong explorers and navigators is what education should be focusing on
- Develop a sense of awe of wonder - love this idea. Want our learners to wonder about the world around them.
- Award each week for the learner who has been star persister, questioner or collaborator.
- Our school culture is not what we say we believe and value. It is what we act as if we believed and valued, day in, day out.
- STOP = Only learnatics beyond this point - great idea for signs around the school.
Once you get past the 'research, data and history' of the first few chapters there are some great thought provoking ideas, questions and examples.
